St. Rita and the Miracle of the Thorn

This image was posted on Wikimedia Commons with no comment other than that it is an Andachtsbild or "devotional picture." It portrays the moment when during her meditations on the Passion Rita received a thorn from Jesus' crown in her forehead.

The scourge in the lower left corner refers to the vita's statement that she would scourge herself three times a day. The roses in the hands of the putti above refer to the miracle by which roses grew for her in January.
